Judge samples in the actual room
Take every sample home and look at it in the bathroom itself: in daylight through the existing window, and at night under the existing fixtures. Look again in the morning. Samples viewed under one light source, once, are the single most common source of regret.
Color temperature has a narrow useful band
For bathrooms, 2700K to 3000K keeps skin tones and warm stone looking natural. Above about 3500K, warm veining goes grey and white surfaces go clinical. Mixing temperatures between the ceiling and the mirror is worse than picking either one consistently.
Color rendering matters more than brightness
A CRI of 90 or above is worth specifying everywhere in a bathroom, and particularly at the mirror. Low-CRI light flattens the difference between similar tones, which is precisely the difference a carefully assembled material palette depends on.
Light the face, not the top of the head
Ceiling downlights above a mirror cast shadows under the eyes and chin. Light placed at either side of the mirror, at roughly face height, is the difference between a mirror that works and one that people avoid.
- Sconces or vertical fixtures flanking the mirror for grooming
- Ceiling light for general circulation, on its own switch
- A low-level or dimmed circuit for night use
Dimming is a design decision
A bathroom used at 6am and at 10pm needs two different rooms. Dimmable drivers and compatible controls have to be specified together; retrofitting dimming onto fixtures that were not chosen for it produces flicker and buzz.
