Bathroom Remodeling Decisions That Should Happen Before Demolition

Almost every delay and cost change in a bathroom project traces back to a decision that was left open when demolition started. The list below is short, and settling it is the cheapest schedule insurance available.

Every fixture, selected and confirmed available

Rough-in plumbing is located from the specific fixtures chosen — not from a category. A different tub, a wall-hung versus floor-mounted toilet, or a valve from another manufacturer changes where pipe goes. Selections should be confirmed in stock or with a known lead time before walls open, because a twelve-week backorder discovered in week two stops the job.

The full tile and stone layout

Where courses start, how they meet corners, where cuts fall, whether the floor and wall joints align. Drawing this out beforehand is what prevents a sliver cut at the most visible corner in the room.

Electrical positions

Sconce heights, outlet locations, switch grouping, heated floor zones and their thermostat, fan placement and any charging drawer. All of it is wired before insulation and board, and all of it is expensive to move after.

Vanity dimensions and drawer plan

Cabinet depth and drawer configuration determine whether the plumbing can sit behind the drawer boxes. That is a coordination item between the cabinetmaker and the plumber, and it happens on paper.

How the household will function during the work

Which bathroom is in use, where dust protection and floor protection run, what hours the crew works, and how long the water will be off on the days it has to be. Agreeing this in advance is what keeps a two-month project from feeling like a six-month one.
